Designers Are Obsessed With Pantone’s Bold and Regal Color of the Year. Pantone has done it again: their 2018 color of the year is bold, beautiful, and nothing like the other color predictions we've seen for next year. The company says their pick, Ultra Violet 18-3838, is a "dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade" and "communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future" — and the design industry agrees. "There’s a hint of fantasy in this color — something almost unreal and fabulist about it, after all, real ultra violet rays are beyond human comprehension – the naked eye can't see them!" says Editor in Chief of House Beautiful, Sophie Donelson. "I like the magic, optimism, and fearlessness it invokes. At home, I’d use it to envelope yourself, royals style – how about a least a mohair throw, it's not quiet a velvet cape, but it'll do!" We bet a plush velvet bench will do the trick, as seen in this dining area.
Living Room vs. Family Room: Is There a Difference? It can be downright baffling to pin down the difference between two seemingly identical concepts. In the epic clash of living room vs. family room, is there really a clear distinction? As a matter of fact, yes. Just as we discovered when exploring the nuances between modern and contemporary design, there's a lot in a label. While plenty of people use the terms "living room" and "family room" more or less interchangeably, they actually aren't the same thing — larger homes sometimes even have both — and it all comes down to how you use the space.
Millennials Have a Favorite Color, and It's Not Pink. Millennial pink: a color so omnipresent, it somehow became symbolic of an entire generation. Deliciously bright and endearing, it's no wonder we're drawn to shops, clothing and interiors that feature the shade. Despite it being literally everywhere, it turns out millennials have an unexpected favorite color — and it's pretty much the exact opposite of pale pink. In celebration of National Painting Week, Sherwin-Williams collaborated with Harris Poll to find out Americans' color preferences, and after surveying 2,200 people over the age of 18, results showed that 41 percent of millennials chose black (gasp!) as their favorite color. Overall, black and blue were the favorites for all ages.
